This rock was approached by a shaft sunk on the shore from which a tunnel was extended to reach a base in the rocks 42 Rock Excavation by Blasting—/// under the seabed. From this base level the rock was honeycombed by a series of vertical raises intersected by horizontal tunnels or drifts into which no less than 1 250000 kg of a high-strength blasting agent were packed and fired by detonating cord. In Russia, too, large explosive charges have been used to excavate canals and to construct rock-filled embankments.
