Madame Bovary - download pdf or read online

Download e-book for kindle: Illusions perdues by Honoré de Balzac

Sample text

The printed version was accompanied by the stiffly erotic pen-and-ink illustrations of Aubrey Beardsley (who would also convert to Catholicism shortly before his own death). 舡 As a journalist, reviewer, and editor he published in and edited some unexpected periodicals, including, for two years, Woman舗s World (although, as an advocate for liberation in dress reform, this particular choice was perhaps not so unusual). His earliest creative attempts were made at poetry, some of it religious in nature and often detailing his European travels.

Queensbury舗s defense attorney even presented The Picture of Dorian Gray as an immoral, perverted book and as one of the fifteen pleas for justification of his client舗s claim (although the justice at Wilde舗s next trial chose not to rule Dorian Gray as evidence of Wilde舗s crimes). Thus the novel took on yet another role: involuntary accomplice to Wilde舗s accuser. The libel suit was not resolved in Wilde舗s favor, and during the proceedings Queensbury舗s defense provided enough potential evidence of homosexuality to have Wilde tried under the Criminal Law Amendment Act.

One of the more extreme influences on The Picture of Dorian Gray remains the strongest candidate for the unnamed 舠poisonous book舡 that Lord Henry gives to Dorian, thereby engendering a narrative-halting digression that rivals any in pre-Modernist literature. This book so fixates Dorian that he begins to model his interests, dȳcor, and behavior after its protagonist舗s unusually obsessive activities and strange tastes, just as Wilde舗s chapter-long tangent accurately imitates this mysterious book舗s own style and preoccupations.
