In order t o p l a c e the Raman s p e c t r a of the present samples i n p e r s p e c t i v e x-ray d i f f r a c t o g r a m s and Raman s p e c t r a of a s e r i e s of c e l l u l o s e s mercerized t o v a r y i n g degrees (2) are reproduced i n F i g . 5 and 6. The d i f f r a c t o g r a m p r i o r observations on system t r a of s i m i l a r p a r t i a l l y converted samples have been reported and d i s c u s s e d p r e v i o u s l y (2). The e s s e n t i a l p a t t e r n of v a r i a t i o n i n these s p e c t r a i s t h a t , p a r t i c u l a r l y i n the low frequency r e g i o n (<600 c m ) , c e l l u l o s e I and c e l l u l o s e I I have d i s t i n c t l y d i f f e r e n t s p e c t r a .
