Enlisted paratroopers got an extra fifty dollars a month, a 130 percent raise. Officers got one hundred dollars a month in jump pay. But when it came to recruiting volunteers—and all paratroopers were volunteers—the best selling point was the airborne’s reputation as one of the hardest assignments in the Army, a reputation the leadership deliberately cultivated. As the sharply dressed recruiters scoured the basic training posts and visited the new divisions, they spread a clear message: only the toughest men would make it through the training and earn the right to wear the silver wings.

There was no money for school, and Sayre had to return to Breckenridge and the family farm. The Texas National Guard, besides giving him a chance to spend time with friends instead of with cows, offered a way to earn a little money at a time when every dollar was important. Even so, Arthur Sayre didn’t think joining the guard was a good idea. ” In those lean years between the wars, when America tried to forget about armies and foreign entanglements, many Americans thought that being a soldier was just a step or two above being a convict, or an indentured servant.

The attacking force included parachutists, glider-borne troops, and elements of two mountain infantry divisions that landed once the paratroopers secured runways for them. Because the Allies had already broken some high-level German codes, the island’s defenders—a collection of British, Australian, New Zealand, Palestinian, and Greek troops—had advance warning of the invasion. The German paratroopers suffered huge losses: nearly 44 percent of the attacking force became casualties, including more than three thousand men killed outright, with another eight thousand wounded.
