X . CONCLUSIONS This paper has argued that design and manufacturing can gain considerable ben efits through the construction and use of knowledge based support tools. These tools will employ multiple knowledge and reasoning facilities integrated into a component centred organisation. We have identified some of the types of knowledge required in engineering design and analysis tasks. Our approach has much in common with the Product Data Model movement at a general level, but we have been more concerned with the techniques needed to support reasoning about products.
